This folk-history tapestry is woven from life, beginning in the early 1800s in Philadelphia to the frontier of Western New York and its beautiful river valley, the Genesee, named by the Seneca Indians. There is something mysterious about this river…It flows northward. You must recognize that the lands to the south are of higher elevation sending runoff waters from northern Pennsylvania, and western New York State flowing north to drop into Lake Ontario. This anomaly gives raise to the term "up~south."
This story of pioneer courage is told through the wizened spirit of an old sugar maple tree. There are tales of trail-blazing land agents and land surveyors, which represented the Dutch Bankers of the Holland Purchase along with robust women, sod-breaking farmers, courageous immigrants, enterprising industrialists, and brave soldiers of war. These threads of real life stories, folklore, and local history are woven together to wrap you in a reminder of this region's past, with hopes to inspire you to search your own roots and to share family anecdotes of yesterday's generation with tomorrow's contemporaries.
